Discover Launceston: Northern Tasmania’s Historic and Scenic Gem

Hello and welcome to the beautiful city of Launceston here in Northern Tasmania. With a population of approximately 90,000 people according to the latest census, you’ll find Launceston is the second largest city in the whole of Tasmania, fifth largest inland city in the whole of Australia and ninth largest non-capital city. You’ll find Launceston is located approximately 201 kilometres north of Tasmania’s state capital of Hobart. and you’ll find it at the confluence of where the North Esk and South Esk River meet, where you’ll find the city located along the banks of the beautiful Tamar River. And you’ll find the city located about 45km south of the Bass Strait, which of course links Tasmania with mainland Australia.

In terms of European settlement, Launceston is one of Australia’s oldest and most historic cities. First founded back in March 1806, the city has an abundance of extremely historic beautiful buildings. Launceston is also very popular with tourists such as major attractions such as the Cataract Gorge Reserve that we’re walking past now really being a highlight for any visit to Launceston. In fact we actually did our separate walking tour all around the spectacular Cataract River Gorge earlier in the day, so be sure to check out that when it drops on the channel.

Aside from that, Launceston is also a very popular tourist hub here in Northern Tasmania as well. Very much a great starting point and gateway to a number of Tasmania’s beautiful regions. Most notably, the lovely Tamar Valley. which is one of Australia’s greatest food bowl regions, also known for its excellent cool climate wines. And of course lovely beautiful rolling planes. Aside from that, some of beautiful Tasmania’s most well-known spectacular destinations are within several hours driving distance. Whether it be the iconic Cradle Mountain Lake St. Clair National Park, the beautiful Bay of Fires region on the east coast of Tasmania or even the ski slopes of Ben Lomond National Park.

Anyway, back to the city of Launceston and onto our walking tour today more specifically. So we’re starting out outside of the Cataract Gorge Reserve where we explored a little bit earlier today. We just crossed the historic King’s Bridge. Now we’re walking down to the equally beautiful King’s Park. Then going to be continuing along the Tamar River, passing all along the Alexandra Walk as well, passing the Northbank Pedestrian Bridge. And of course the main shopping and pedestrian areas of the Brisbane Street Mall and the Quadrant Mall. So with our summary of today’s walking tour out of the way, we’ll give it a time now to sit back, relax, cease the background music, cease the commentary, let you fully enjoy all the beautiful sights and sounds of lovely Launceston here in Northern Tasmania.
