Regional Express Airlines have announced that it has just signed a new Letter of Intent (LOI) to lease an additional two Boeing 737-800NG jets in what appears to be a vote of confidence in its relatively new foray into the Australian domestic jet service market. The two new aircraft are expected to arrive in Australia in June and July respectively and will bring Rex’s fleet of Boeing 737-800NG aircraft that it now operates up to 9 in addition to its sizeable 61 strong fleet of Saab 340 aircraft which services its traditional regional stronghold markets.
REX first enter the Australian jet service market back in March 2021 amidst a difficult time in Australian aviation due to rolling pandemic lockdowns and border closures and onerous state travel restrictions. After a rocky entrance to the jet market the Airline has now produced four consecutive profitable months with the new move said to be in response for booming Australian travel demand. REX also finalized acquisition of National Jet Express last year for a reported $48 million coming as a further sign of the airline’s willingness to expand.
Rex Deputy Chairman, the Hon John Sharp AM, said,
“Rex’s domestic jet services have been performing very strongly and have been profitable in the past four months.
“The travelling public has been crying out for our reliable and affordable services in the light
of the shameless price gouging by Qantas and these new additions will help to alleviate the
situation.
“We are still deciding where to deploy these additional aircraft and will explore all options.”
