Qantas launches new Melbourne to Jakarta service

In great news for Victorian travelers bound for Indonesia, Melbourne will soon benefit from a new service to be operated by Qantas between the Victorian capital and Jakarta, Indonesia. From 16th April 2023, the Flying Kangaroo will operate a thrice weekly service between Melbourne and the Indonesian capital with its widebody Airbus A330 aircraft. The new service will be the third such launch since Australia’s borders reopened with Melbourne Airport having also seen new direct flights to Delhi and Dallas For-Worth. It will also complement Garuda Indonesia’s limited twice weekly service between the two cities.

The new services complements Qantas’s already established presence in Indonesia which includes flights to Bali from across the Qantas Group of airlines including Jetstar and also the flag carrier’s direct services between Sydney and Jakarta. Unfortunately Qantas did also have plans to establish a new service between Perth and Jakarta last year which however fell through due to regulatory and planning issues. Nonetheless this new service is expected to add 6,600 monthly seats on flights between Australia and Jakarta.

The new service QF39 will operate ever Wednesday, Friday and Sunday jetting out of Melbourne at 3.10pm before arriving into Jakarta’s Soekarno Hatta International Airport at 7.15pm. Meanwhile after a short turn around the same plane operating as QF40 will leave Jakarta that same evening at 9pm before arriving into Melbourne at 6.40am the following morning.

Qantas Domestic and International CEO Andrew David said the airline was excited to be expanding its international network from Melbourne.

“Victoria is an incredibly important part of our network and we’re seeing strong demand for travel to and from Melbourne,” Mr David said.

“We expect these flights to be popular with Victoria’s large Indonesian expat community wanting to visit family and friends back home as well as offering a new gateway for travellers looking to explore the region.

“Indonesia is a rapidly growing economy and home to more than 270 million people. As one of Australia’s closest neighbours, these new flights will also help support the growing trade and investment links between our two countries.

“We’d like to thank the Victorian Government and Melbourne Airport for their support and collaboration on the launch of this new route.”

To celebrate the new route, Qantas is offering a special fare starting from $899 return, available until 7 February 2023, unless sold out prior. Fares are now available at qantas.com or through Travel Agents.
