Where is the Qantas Club Located?
Melbourne Airport’s Qantas Club is located not too far after completing terminal 1 security. Once through you will quickly find the Qantas Lounge lobby on the left hand side which houses both the Qantas Club and Qantas Domestic Business Lounge.
Who Can Access the Lounge and When is it Open?
Melbourne Airport has 3 domestic Qantas Lounges with a Business Lounge in addition to the invite only exclusive Chairman’s Lounge. This makes this lounge the one to go to for Qantas Club and Qantas Gold customers. Complimentary lounge invitations can also be redeemed at this lounge subject to capacity requirements For those flying Business or are Platinum and above members there is a Business Lounge at Melbourne so these passengers are more than welcome to visit this lounge too. The full eligibility for the Qantas Club in Melbourne is as follows:
Qantas Club (+1 guest)
Qantas Gold (+1 guest)
Oneworld Sapphire (+1 guest).
Emirates Skywards Gold (+1 guest).
Air New Zealand Gold (+1 guest, and must be on an NZ flight number).
China Eastern Miles Gold (+1 guest)
Alaskan Airlines Lounge (+2 Guests)
American Airlines Admirals Club (+2 guests)
Melbourne’s domestic Qantas Club Lounge is open 7 days continuously throughout the day with opening hours between one hour before the first Qantas operated service of the morning until the last Qantas departure in the evening.
Lounge Design and Seating
Melbourne Airport’s Qantas is certainly not the norm in terms of the typical shape of the lounge. Here you’ll find the lounge to be rather lengthy, but narrow and rectangular in shape. Aside from this the lounge very much has a varied range of seating zones with a good range of seating options consisting of the fairly standard range of Qantas Club furniture that you become known to expect. Whilst the seating may be a step below that of the Qantas Business Lounges its comfortable and practical nonetheless and whether you are there to relax, eat and drink, socialize or work there are plenty of options to suit all.
Unfortunately one downside of the lounge is its lack of any tarmac views meaning it is also void of any real natural sunlight. Views are limited to the Qantas check in counters which are located on the level below – interesting nonetheless but certainly not as enjoyable as the former.
Food and Beverage
Self Service Buffet
When it comes to food and beverage these needs are well catered too as well with a central buffet area providing a selection of foods appropriate to the time of the day. We visited at a little bit of an in-between time at around 10.30am which was between breakfast and lunch so the selection was more limited to mainly cold cut meats and continental options however more substantial hot options are available during breakfast, lunch and dinner hours. More all day snacks such as potato chips or cheese and crackers would have been appreciated though with this offered more often in Virgin lounges from my experience.
The Bar and Barista Station
The lounge also has a well stocked and visually appealing bar which adds a premium feel to the lounge which has a good range of beer (including on tap), Australian wines, spirits and soft drinks. The bar also doubles as an all day tendered barista station where you can get barista made coffee anytime the lounge is open. There are also several smaller self service stations where you can get mineral and filtered water, self service espresso machine coffees and soft drinks. I didn’t have much time to spend in today’s lounge so opted for a self service coffee which still tasted pretty decent. As with all domestic Qantas lounges they are officially dry until the strike of noon so if you are using a lounge invitation you may want to save it for an afternoon flight if this bothers you.
Service and Staff
Compared to Qantas’s International Lounges and some of their regional Qantas Club’s you’ll really notice the staffing and customer service at this lounge. Customer facing Staffing at the lounge is not just confined to to the reception desk and cleaning crew. Most notably there is an assisted buffet and tendered bar and also a barista station. Service staff did well to regularly replenish the food and drinks options whilst cleaning staff were spotted often sanitizing and clearing tables and keeping the amenities in good condition. Good work Qantas here!
Lounge Amenities
The Qantas Club in Melbourne offers all usual amenities you would expect for a capital city Qantas Lounge. The bathroom area appeared to be well serviced and kept clean during our visit. Shower faculties are also available and appeared to be in well kept condition with complimentary towel hire available.
The WIFI appeared to work well in the lounge and was amongst some of the fastest and most reliable we had experienced in a lounge before. Access to charging ports were available in the lounge but there not available in all locations so if you need them be sure to check before settling in. The lounge also has a magazine rack which provides a range of literature and newspapers and also the Qantas Magazine for those who fancy an old fashioned read before on on their flight.
Summing Up
In summing up, the Qantas Club in Melbourne is definitely one of the biggest and busiest in the Qantas Network but it is well designed to towards catering towards the crowds. Compared to smaller regional Qantas Club’s you’ll find among the most extensive faculties, amenities and food and beverage options with a wide range of seating to cater to all types of travelers from business to leisure and everything in between. Ultimately, it is by no means the most luxurious lounge in Melbourne but there is always the Business Lounge for Business Class and Platinum+ QFF members so it really ticks all the right boxes for the predominately economy class passengers it services.
